Most medical specialists require a referral from either a GP or another specialist. This is to ensure that the specialist you are seeing is appropriate for you and your condition, and that you are being seen in a clinically appropriate time frame. Medicare will also reimburse part of the cost if a referral has been provided.

Yes, if you have a valid referral (GP referrals are usually valid for 12 months, specialist referral are valid for 3 months) and a valid Medicare card. This applies only to medical dermatology consultations and procedures. Cosmetic consultations and procedures are separate to this and, in most cases, no medicare rebate is applicable.

No, in Australia, legislation does not permit private health insurance providers to fund additional rebates in an outpatient setting (outside of hospital).
